Ever dreamt of opening your own zoo? Well, with Minecraft, now you can. Learn how to tame animals, build a zoo, and how to make a saddle in Minecraft.
Taming animals in Minecraft is a fun way to add some spice into the game. You can tame horses, llamas, parrots and more. If you build a saddle, then you can ride a horse – or even a llama. That sounds mighty fun, now, doesn’t it? Read on to see how to do it.
Minecraft is pretty well-known by now as being the ultimate sandbox adventure game. You can build anything you want, from medieval looking villages to advanced futuristic cyberpunk cities.
In between building, you can also dig into the depths of the earth, explore dungeons and fortresses, confront dragons, navigate lakes of larva… and lead a caravan of llamas on an epic journey of discovery across the desert.
We keep bringing this back to llamas. But seriously, have you ever been up close and personal with one? The very idea of riding around on a llama is hilarious to anyone who has. Now, if you’re keen to tame some animals, build a stable and a livery, or even build a kind of farm-like zoo to keep them all for your friends to come and see, then read on to find out how to tame, keep and feed your animals in Minecraft.
How to Make a Saddle in Minecraft
In order to tame a horse or llama in Minecraft, you’ll need to have a saddle. Once you’ve tamed a horse, you can put a saddle on it and ride it – controlling the direction. With llamas, you can ride them, but you have no control of where they move.
So, how to make a saddle in Minecraft? Trick question – you can’t. Rather, you’ll have to find one in either a dungeon chest, or in a Nether fortress. This can be a bit of a pain, but be patient, your saddle will come to you.
How to Tame a Horse in Minecraft
We’ll start with the most practical one. Taming a horse in Minecraft is relatively simple. First, you need to find a horse (we’re assuming that at this point you would have already found a saddle).
You can usually find horses in the Plains biome, although, if you’re in creative mode, then you could just grow one from an egg (yes, that doesn’t make any sense, but oh well), or use a cheat to spawn one (when you think about it, that actually makes a lot less sense than growing one from an egg).
To tame a horse, you’ll need to make sure you have nothing in your toolbar – be totally unarmed. Try and mount the horse. It will buck you off, and then you must get on it again, it will buck you off again – so be persistent and climb up again. Each time you try the horse will let you sit on it for longer until, eventually, lots of red hearts will appear around it, and you will have prevailed. The horse is now yours – but you can’t control its movement until you’ve put a saddle on it.
To put a saddle on a horse, you’ll need to select the saddle in your toolbar – depending on the edition of Minecraft you’re playing, the controls will be different, but basically, you want to equip your horse with the saddle.
Now, when you ride it, you can control its movement. Voila!
How to Tame a Llama in Minecraft
Now for the juicy bit. Taming llamas. Steve Irwin style. Taming a llama works a little differently to taming a horse. There’s more courting involved, you could say. First, you’ll need to find a llama – unless, again, you grow one from an egg or use a cheat to spawn one. Teleporting llamas. Awesome.
You can find llamas in the extreme hills or the savannah. If you want to know how to ride a llama in Minecraft, then you’ll first need to know what llamas eat in Minecraft.
You’ll need 10 lots of wheat and 5 hay bales to feed to the llama to tame it. Once you’ve fed it, it’ll love you forever so you don’t have to worry about being forever alone. You and your llama prince can roam the savannahs aimlessly, reciting poetry and shooting at the moon.
The thing is, you can’t actually put a saddle on a llama, and as such, you can’t control the direction it goes when you ride it. You can guide it though, you can use a lead to guide it. You can make a caravan of up to ten llamas to guide through the Minecraft world. You can equip them with carpets and chests to put stuff in. Pretty useful, eh?
How to breed horses and llamas in Minecraft
To make more animals, you can put them into “Love Mode” and watch them breed. That sounded weird, didn’t it…
To put your animals into love mode, simply feed them a golden apple or golden carrot. They will then charge head first into each other and a baby animal will appear in between them.
Clearly, the developers at Mojang are either really trying to keep Minecraft PC, or they just have a serious lack of intimacy in their lives and never quite figured out how reproduction works… Let’s hope for their sake that it’s the first one.
How to Tame a Parrot in Minecraft
As a bonus, let’s teach you how to tame a parrot in Minecraft, too. Taming a parrot is easy, first, you need to find a parrot (obviously). Now, this is different from taming the other animals, as you don’t have to sit on it at any point – quite the contrary, in fact.
You’ll need to find seeds – any seeds – and feed them to the parrot. Keep feeding the parrot the seeds until red hearts appear all around it. You can now have it sit on your shoulder while you wander around the Minecraft world.
You are now officially a Minecraft pirate. Well, not officially, but whatever.
That’s a wrap!
